Mother Tongue

Mother Tongue in schools keep cropping up. It seems that no matter what the MOE does, the students cannot cope with Chinese as a mother tongue. Why learn a second language in the first place? Or for that matter, why learn a foreign Lang?

The main reason for learning a language is so that we can communicate with others. It also helps us to understand another culture better. So should learning of mother Tongue be discontinued? I feel that it should be continued. There has already been a lot of dilution of the study of second languages.

Maybe theOE should leave the option of which second language someone wants to learn. It does not necessarily be his or her mother Tongue. My mother Tongue is Bengali but I did fairly well for Malay. Likewise my daughter is doing ok in Malay.
